Bacon Bits
I have wanted to be a writer since I was four years old. I remember it well. I was sitting underneath the dining room table, hiding behind the floor length tablecloth. I was hiding because I was sucking on a penny. I quietly sang the ABCs song, although I hadn't the foggiest idea what ABCs were. That particular day, my Dad was home, which was very, very rare, as he usually was gone, working long hours at (of all places) ABC Television, or spending time at the Paramahansa Yogananda Fellowship Center in Pacific Palisades, studying Transcendental Meditation.
"Daddy?" I asked suddenly, "How do you spell my name?"
"You're not sucking on that penny, are you?" he asked.
"No, Daddy," I said, as I tucked the penny between my cheek and gum. "How do you spell my name?"
"S-U-M-M-E-R," he said slowly, so I could absorb it.
"S-U-M-M-E..." I repeated slowly, when it suddenly dawned on me that those were ABCs! My name was made out of ABCs! As the revelation sunk in, and the final "R" came out of my mouth, my eyes grew wide in wonder, and...I promptly swallowed the penny!
ABCs made words, and there was nothing more miraculous to me. Right then and there I thought, "I'm going to be writer when I grow up!"
Well, I didn't exactly become the author of books that I'd hoped to become. I got a teensy bit side-tracked with my spiritual work. But, my love of writing, and ability to write did take me down lots of interesting paths, doing (of all things) ghost-writing for a major CEO of a leading Human Resource Services Company, and writing faux commercials for Goodson-Todman's game show run-through pilots.
I hope you enjoy my chronicles of down-to-earth spiritual adventures.
