NOTE: This is from a conversation that Dr. Peebles had with my father in March 1999 regarding “Sweet Surrender.” Dr. Peebles often encourages us to surrender to the embrace of life; surrender to the journey rather than resisting the same, because it takes a lot of effort to hold life at arm’s length.
RON: Why are we so resistant to just surrendering? What is it that we hold onto?
DR. PEEBLES: God bless you indeed. First of all, it is not a process of “just surrendering.” It makes it sound as if it is “just surrender” and that is not what you fear. If it was “just surrender” then it would be rather simple, yah?
RON: Yeah.
DR. PEEBLES: But rather, what you are surrendering to is everything all at one time. That in itself seems rather overwhelming, because what you are really surrendering to is the idea of the understanding that you are worthy of love, and that you are God, God is you, i.e., One and the same.
